For
the Love of an Anesthesiologist
About the Play
A Note From The Playwright
For the Love of An Anesthesiologist began four years ago, shortly after Audacity got off the ground. The first few drafts had alien abductions, an anti-propaganda propagandist, a life-size map of the universe, Brown Recluse spider bites and a narrator who openly despised the play he was in.
So, it has changed a little… An excerpt of the work received a staged-reading at Borders Bookstore Cafe in Lewisville, TX way back in June 2000. Multiple drafts since, I have gleaned lots of material just from working on this play. Much of this material has shown up in other circles of my work, particularly within the sketch-revue format of the Mild Dementia Continuous-Play Variety Hour, of which I have had the privilege of managing since 1999.
Ultimately, I strive to create the kind of theatre I want to see - bold, fast, funny, sexy, and bizarre. The cast has been great, bringing a great deal to the table throughout the rehearsal process and giving me an infinite number of new ideas. A real collaboration. I thank them and I thank you, the audience, for coming out to support new work in your local theatre. ~Brad McEntire
Synopsis... sorta
FOR THE LOVE OF AN ANESTHESIOLOGIST concerns a man, ALFRED, who is driven to an unpleasant act by his devoted love for CLAUDIA, an anesthesiologist. This act leads, in turn, to a life outside the law and on the lam.
Now, he must face judgment for his past. Though the play doesn't work so much in a chronological fashion, here are the events: Claudia and Alfred meet and fall in love. Alfred proposes marriage and they agree to buy a house together, if Alfred can get and keep a job. He gets a job, but due to circumstances beyond his control, loses it. Claudia doesn't show up to co-sign and close on the house the two were to buy to begin their new lives together. Out of desperation, Alfred kills the real estate agent. The rest of his life is spent as an outlaw, on the run. He falls in with a globe-trotting revolutionary/freedom fighter femme fatale named CONTESSA VROOM.
He now comes to the end of his life… Judgment Day. His past memories of both Claudia and the Contessa interweave in his mind as he awaits his turn at judgment. He must come to terms with his past lives, his past deeds, as he prepares to meet his Maker. He does this waiting at a cocktail lounge with a WAITRESS named Hank, somewhere on the edge of life and death. The embodiments of what he could have been and what he was converge. Finally, a mysterious and transmorphic MAN IN A TRENCH COAT guides him to the other side.
