* What is Audacity exactly?

Audacity is a theatre company. We are a nonprofit corporation, though not 501(c)3. We are beholden to the members of the company and the State of Texas and no one else. We dislike paperwork. We are striving to produce a body of work with a common aesthetic.

* Do you take subscriptions for your season?

Well, we don't really have an actual "season" per say. We produce our projects organically, with no set "slots" to fill. And we are not a subscription theatre. Our finacial support comes exclusively from ticket sales and the occassional fund-raiser. One project pays for the next and so on. That's just part of the reason we keep the budgets low. There's freedom in it. No corporate sponsors, no grants, and no subscriptions. No reins.

* Where do you mount your productions?

We are based just north of Dallas, Texas and primarily perform at the Bath House Cultural Center, among other locations around Dallas. Concurrently, Audacity performs a large portion of its projects abroad, as part of the wider American (and International) theatre community. This includes Festivals around the country, including the New York International Fringe Festival, as well as the Mind Over Money Theatrical Festival and FronteraFest in Austin.

* Can I become a member of the ensemble?

We are not a set "company" or ensemble really. Instead, Audacity cultivates a diverse, growing network of unofficial "affiliated" artists. For very specific reasons; we wanted to invest in artists without centering our relationships with them on obligation, so Audacity is structured so that affiliated artists can move in and out of involvement as their (and our own) interests and time allow. No guilt! No pressure! Determining who these affiliated artists are is not a scientific process and we seldom actually refer to them as "affilated artists", but one stipulation is always calculated: we really do look for the best people we can find for whatever project we are doing.

We build relationships with artists over time - which is, actually, how most things happen in this business. The relationship starts when you submit your play or we see your acting or directing work or you have done a really great audition for us; but it usually gets going when you work with us on a small-scale project, like a reading or some such. These projects can tell us whether we're on the same wavelength, as artists and people. You get to know us, we get to know you, and if we fit, chances are we'll work on more and ultimately bigger projects together.

* How do I know when you hold auditions?

Most of the people we use on a per project basis are from a network of folks we already are familiar with (see that stuff about affiliated artists above). Most theatre companies operate this way. They just don't tell you to your face. Periodically, we hold auditions when needed and scope out new blood. More often than not, we invite new artists in to read for a part or audition after we've seen them perform in or direct something else. You can always get on our good side and come see an Audacity Production. Introduce yourself after the show. When we do have auditions, we usually send notices out to Actors Place and S.T.A.G.E. here in the Dallas-Ft.Worth area.

* How can I be kept abreast of what is going on with Audacity?

* Final Note: Know what you're getting into.

We're a small company. No one gets paid too terribly much (sometimes not at all, but we're working on this). Most of our projects have a budget of zero. But we can and do support artists and their work, even with limited human and financial resources. What we have to offer is a sort of environment; one we hope is fun, open and conducive to the best possible work under a common mission. Our resources are minimal, but include the passion and vision of talented, pro-active artists who know that their best chance lies in getting out there and making their work happen, and maybe, little by little, pressing the limits of accepted perceptions along the way.
