The Small Change Project

A FEW NOTES ABOUT THIS PROJECT (From the Program Notes): At the beginning of last summer, off-the-cuff, I commissioned several writers I know to write scripts based on Tom Waits' 1976 album SMALL CHANGE. The aim was one of pure experiment. I told the writers I wasn't sure if they'd ever be produced or even heard by an audience, but we'd cross that bridge when we came to it.

So, several months later, as the last of the scripts trickled in, I realized I had a great collection of plays. Plays inspired by and/or informed by a whole other medium. Yeah, we definitely had to have a reading.

Cut to another few months later. A great group of versatile actors were put together, a few rehearsals were held, and here you have it.

The aim for this is just to give the scripts a chance to stand up, give the playwrights an idea of how their works fair in actors' mouths and in front of an audience, and to give the audience an opportunity to comment on/discuss the concept of the format: an artist's work from another medium being the basis for original works for the stage.
